Life used to be simple. Products were made to stock and customer orders were filled from stock in the warehouse, based on orders received by Fax or directly entered into the organization’s ERP system.
Production was planned weeks ahead of time to replenish the stock of a limited number of products, in the warehouse, based on projected demand.
Then along came Amazon and other on-line retailers, promising to deliver a vast array of products in a few days at low prices. In response, most US Manufacturers switched from make-to-stock to make-to-order processing, where a wide array of different products could be quickly manufactured from a limited inventory of intermediate materials.
At the same time, the number of ways that customer orders could arrive exploded; from a company’s own E-Commerce website and those of its distributors, to orders arriving through other reseller channels by EDI, as well as from orders placed directly by the company’s own inside and outside sales people.
Efficiently managing this flow of orders, while making sure that customer orders are quickly and accurately fulfilled quickly becomes an overwhelming task, especially when multiple manufacturing plants and warehouses are involved.
The answer to quickly and accurately processing this flow of customer orders is to use Artificial Intelligence (AI).
With a SmartOps solution, this is not in the form of regenerative AI systems, which require large expensive super-computers to run. Instead, the intelligent agent software can run on a small ruggedized Internet of Things (IOT) computer, such as that shown here.
With an intelligent agent software platform, such as SnartOps247 from SmartOpsMgt, orders from a wide variety of sources can be processed by intelligent agents which perform all the “intelligent grunt work” needed to automatically process these orders, instead of having people perform these tasks.
